BAILEY, Edna Mae
Passed away at St. Joseph's Apartments where she had been residing on Saturday
February 27, 2010 very unexpectedly.
Born on May 19, 1937 in Avoca, NY, Edna was the daughter of the late John Earl
Calkins & Esther G. Bennett Brush. She was married to Charles Victor
Bailey in 1955 and he predeceased her in 1982. Edna was employed for over 20
years at the Red Jacket Restaurant. Dedicated to her loving family she enjoyed
being a mother to her six children, Elaine (Jeffrey) Schmoel, John (Julie)
Bailey, Earl (Rhonda) Bailey, Michael (Charlene) Bailey, Victoria (Bill)
Covert and her beloved Karen Keck who predeceased her. Also surviving is her
sister, Onalee Clark; daughter -in-law, Mary Ann Bailey; sons-in-law, Bob Keck
and Karl Harbot; along with grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and family friends.
Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens,
1126 Broadway, Southport on Thursday March 4, 2010 from 12 (noon) - 1 pm .
Funeral services will follow the visitation at 1 pm. Edna will be interred in
Forest Lawn Memorial Park beside her husband, Charles V. Bailey.
MILLHAM. Mary Ella
A longtime resident of the Elmira Heights community passed away Saturday,
February 27, 2010.
Born on April 10, 1918 in Elmira, She was the daughter of the late Frederick
A. & Mary Frances Collins Stutske. Mary graduated from Elmira Free Academy
and received a degree from Elmira Business Institute. She Was employed briefly
at American Bridge in Elmira Heights where she would meet her future husband,
Harold "Pete" S. Millham and they were married on February 8, 1941;
he predeceased her on October 3, 1996. Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She
was active in Elmira Heights Women's Rotary, the PTA and Girl Scouts. In later
years she was employed by Charles Albert's Jewelry Store and Jerome's Clothing
Store. She was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church for over 50 years.
Surviving is her loving daughter and son-in-law, Anne (R. Smith) Clifton,
Albuquerque, NM and grandson, Adam Clifton. In addition to her beloved family.
Mary leaves behind wonderful and cherished friends who made her final days so
special and comfortable. Thank you to Ide Mezur, Tom & Mary Klotz and Joy
Watson.

LYON, Barbara Susan Egan
Born on April 17, 1920 , passed away peacefully, Wednesday February 24, 2010
at St. Joseph's Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility where she received the best
care possible. Early years she spent in Wisconsin while spending summertime at
local Fountain Bleau, the families summer home. She Married Garnet Rexford
Lyon on February 2, 1942. Barbara earned her LPN as a student at Arnot-Ogden
and worked for Doctor's Kaplan, Persuad and many others until retiring in
1975. Barbara volunteered for the Arnot-Ogden Hospital for many years. In
recent years she was an avid supporter of the restoration efforts at Eldridge
Park donating hundreds of hours of her time. Barbara passed away while sharing
her room with her husband of 68 years. She was a wonderful mother, nurse and
friend to all. Barbara is survived by her loving husband, Garnet R. Lyon;
children, Ronda Jean Allen, Jon Garnet Lyon, Nancy Ann Mitchell and Dr. Robert
Lyon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Eldridge
Park Carousel Preservation Society, (EPCPS), PO Box 3056, Elmira, NY 14905 in

LaGier, Blanche Opal (Cashman)
Elmira, NY
He will swallow up death in victory: and the Lord God will wipe away tears

Our Heavenly Father wrapped his arms around Blanche at her home surrounded
by the care of her loving family on Thursday, February 18, 2010.
She was born October 27, 1931, in Binghamton, NY to the late Erwin and Irene
Cashman. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son in law, Renee &
Ron Unwin, Elmira; her, grandson, Aaron LaGier, Elmira; and her
great-grandchildren, Zachary, Connor and Julian. She is also survived by her
sisters, Phyllis Judge, Rochester; Donna Bartow, NC; and sisters and brothers
in-law, Grace & Tom Creagh, Nora & Bob Smith, both of Binghamton; as
well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son, Robert E.
LaGier (2004), and brothers Erwin Jr. and Bert Cashman. She was met at the
gates of heaven by her nephew, Ed Creagh who also went to be with our Lord on
February 16, 2010. She was also predeceased by the love of her life, Chet
Kowalski (1996), who is dancing with her in Heaven right now.
Blanche graduated from Binghamton North High School and Corning Community
College with honors. She was a 30 year employee and retiree of Westinghouse.
She was a longtime and active member of the Pennsylvania Avenue United
Methodist Church, faithfully participating in the Thursday Women's Bible study
group. She was a member of the Elmira Heights American Legion Post 154, Polish
Arts Club, the Soaring Polka Association and the White Eagles Club.
She was an avid competitive golfer with a hole in one and member of the Willow
Creek Golf Course. She also enjoyed bowling, roller skating, gardening,
sewing, and anything else that had to do with working with her hands.
She will be missed by her many, many, many friends and her faithful companion
Miss Bonnie Belle.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, February,
27, 2010 at the Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. with her
pastor and friend, the Reverend William Vallet and the Asst. Pastor at the
Bible Speaks Church and longtime friend, Jim Kellogg officiating. Graveside
services will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the springtime.
Family will provide their own flowers, memorial donations may be directed to
the charity of ones choice in her memory.
KANE, Hugh Carlton
"Carlie"
A longtime and well known resident of the Fassett and Gillett, PA communities
passed away Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Sylvan Ridge Personal Care Home,
Columbia Cross Roads, where he had been receiving care at the age of 92.
Born on September 2, 1917 in Erie, PA, Carlie was the son of Reverend J.
Sydney & Nevah Holcomb Kane. With a high regard for education, Hugh
received his B.A. from Adrian College, MI with a degree in Education and
received his M.S. from the University of Southern California. He received his
Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Sarasota. After living and
teaching in California, he educated students at Horseheads, New York School
District from 1953-1968. There he worked with elementary students and junior
high special education students. Dr. Kane was an Associate Professor of
Education and Supervisor of Student Teachers at Mansfield University from
1968-1970. He also was a Clinical Associate Psychologist for the New York
State Department of Mental Hygiene at the Elmira Reception Center. Throughout
his career he was well respected by his colleagues and students. He owned and
operated Northend Garage, Laundromat, and Car Wash. He was a member of the
Masonic Trojan Lodge # 306, the Elmira Heights American Legion, and the
Fassett Grange.
Dedicated to his country, Carlie served in the United States Navy during WWII
in the South Pacific on LST 449. His loving wife of 40 years, Edith Congdon
Kane, predeceased him in 1990. In serving the Lord, Carlie was a member of the
Fassett Baptist Church where he would often share his musical gift of playing
the violin for services. His passions included traveling with his wife Edith,
writing poetry, playing music, visiting friends and relatives, attending Navy
conventions, and collecting classic cars.
He is survived by his loving family, twin daughters, Collette (Marvin) Roberts
and Colleen Kane, Gillett, PA; grandson, Timothy Roberts; brother, Reverend J.
Sydney Kane Jr., Lansdale, PA; nephew, Houghton (Nancy) Kane, Lansdale, PA;
niece, Margaret (Dennis) Roberts, Fort Wayne, IN; step-sons, Thomas
(Jeannette) Congdon, Pine City and family, Lisa (James) Epp and Scott Congdon;
and Lynn (Barbara) Congdon, Gillett, PA and family, Tanya (David) Decker,
Barbara Lynn (Chris) Valero, and Shaun (Rebecca) Congdon. In addition to his
parents and wife, Carlie was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Elise Kane.

Cemetery, Middlebury Center, PA where full military honors will be accorded
Mr. Kane.

POND, Margaret J.
Formerly of 278 Curtis St. Southport, and presently residing at the Bethany
Manor, passed away, Saturday morning, February 20, 2010 at the Arnot-Ogden
Medical Center following an illness.
Margaret was born on June 29, 1950 in Elmira, daughter of the late Maurice
& Gladys Christian McGrain. She was married to Ronald A. Pond in 1970 and
he predeceased her last year. Margaret was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts,
caring for her home, her pets and most recently treasured the friendships she
made while residing at the Manor. She was a longtime member of the Elmira
Wesleyan Church. Surviving is her brothers-in-law, Donald (Grace) Pond,
Athens, PA; George (Louise) Pond, Waverly; Robert (Marion) Pond, Sayre, PA;
brothers, Richard and Maurice McGrain, CA and their families; along with many
friends who will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126
Broadway, Southport, on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 11 a.m. - 12 noon.
Her funeral service will follow at 12 noon with the Reverend John Talada
officiating after which she will be interred beside her beloved husband,

WANDELL, LaVerne G.
A longtime resident of the West Elmira community, passed away on Friday,
February 12, 2010 in the comfort of his home in the care of his family at the
age of 85.
Born on August 17, 1924 in Elmira, LaVerne was the son of the late, Wilbert C.
& Jesse Mace Wandell. Dedicated to his country he proudly served in the
United States Army during WWII. Following the war, LaVerne married Katherine
Butts on June 10, 1946 in Elmira. A hard worker and good provider, LaVerne was
employed by Swift Meat Co. and Hardinge Inc. for many years. In serving the
Lord, he was a member of the Westside United Methodist Church and a member of
the Elmira Heights Masonic Lodge. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling.
LaVerne cherished his family who survive, wife of nearly 64 years, Katherine
Butts Wandell; daughter, Mary K. (Michael R.) Boorum, Niagara Falls; son,
Verne R. (Lorrie) Wandell, MI; sister, Florence Rose, Horseheads; five
grandchildren, Michael (Casey) Boorum, Michelle (Kirt) Bordonaro, Melaine
(Zachary) Herr, all of the Niagara Falls area; Elizabeth (Alex) Witt, MI; and
Lauren Wandell, CA; five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and family
friends.
In addition to his parents, Wilbert C. & Jesse Mace Wandell, LaVerne was
also predeceased by his siblings, Neva, Charles, Woodrow and John.

corner of Foster and First Sts. Elmira on Friday February 19, 2010 at 11 am.
Mr. Wandell's ashes will be interred in Woodlawn National Cemetery at 2 pm,
Friday where full military honors will be accorded.

OBERG, Albert E.
91, of Horseheads, passed away peacefully February 10, 2010 in his home,
surrounded by family, and in the arms of his loving wife and soulmate of 61
years, Mildred. He braved a six month battle with pancreatic cancer just as he
did everything else in his life - with grace, strength, and a sense of humor.
Albert was born to Ragnhild and Carl Gustav Albert Oberg on July 28, 1918 in
Proctor, Vermont. Albert's mother Ragnhild died in the flu epidemic of 1918.
He was subsequently raised by his adoptive parents, Marcus and Amanda Ling.
Albert attended high school in Rutland, VT where he was active in sports and
theater. After high school Albert worked in Rutland. He enlisted in the U.S.
Navy in 1940, serving throughout World War II. He survived the 1942 sinking of
the USS Jacob Jones. (Thanks to the efforts of the Elmira Office of the
Department of Veterans Affairs, he was unexpectedly honored with the Purple
Heart in a beautiful 2009 Veterans Day ceremony in Elmira.) After recovering
from his wounds, he spent four additional years in the Pacific theater. He
returned to Vermont where he met Mildred Lampman on a blind date; they married
two years later. Albert graduated in 1951from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, Troy NY, with a BS in Physics. He worked for Westinghouse in
Horseheads where he was awarded 7 patents as an electronics engineer from 1952
until his retirement in 1981. He and Mildred lived in Elmira Heights until
1963, following which they enjoyed many happy years at their home in rural
Veteran township; property he often referred to as being like heaven.
Albert and Mildred raised 4 sons, and enjoyed many wonderful years with their
extended family.
Albert is pre-deceased by his parents; Carl Gustav Albert Oberg and Ragnhild
(Peterson); his adoptive parents Marcus and Amanda Ling; brother-in-law Paul
McMahon and granddaughter Katie. He is survived by his wife Mildred; his
sister Laurel McMahon of VT; sister-in-law Frances Lampman of VT; sons, Keith
(Roxie) Oberg of PA, Eric (Judy) Oberg of VT, Don (Ilka) Oberg of NC; Glenn
(Faith) Oberg of KY grandsons Michael (Lauren) Oberg of GA; Dylan Mendelson of
NY; Gregory (Lisa) Oberg of NY; Matthew Oberg of PA ; granddaughters: Pauline
(Lance) Kilmer of NY; Darcy (Ludovic) Buret of VT; Rebecca (Jeffrey) Smith of
NY; great grandsons Alex and Brendon, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews,
and many dear neighbors and friends.
Albert was a loving man, and possessed an inquisitive intellect, deep
appreciation for music, nature, travel, art, philosophy, square dancing, and
life in general. He often noted that love was the most important thing of all.
He will be very much missed by all who knew and loved him.

A proud and gracious lady who was respected and loved by her family, passed on
Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center. She had resided
at Bethany Village and previously lived in Ocala, FL.
Born on September 26, 1926 in Gillett, PA, Doris was the daughter of the late
William & Rosamond Updike Holton. She was a graduate of Troy High School.
Doris was employed by Iszards and Lodge on the Green for many years. She
enjoyed golf, travel, and caring for her canine companions.
Surviving is her loving family, sister, Phyllis Myers, Horseheads; brother,
Donald Holton, Elmira; nieces and nephews, Helen Kay (Duane) Shedden,
Richard(Bertha) Holton, Shirley Smith, John (Karen) Holton, Rosalie (Russell)

Called home by God Thursday January 21, 2010 surrounded by her loving family.
She is predeceased by her loving parents, Leo & Bette (Rohde) Garelle;
grandmother, Adele Rohde (her adored Mine); beloved life companion, Derek
Clarke; brother, Bernard (Bernie) Garelle; and nephew, Jamie DeRico.
She is survived by her children, sons, Michael Nelan (Nicola Donohoe); David
Nelan (Jennie Daugherty); and daughter, Monica Garelle; brother, Leo Garelle
Jr.; sister, Rita Ann Garelle; grandchildren, Kerrick Duchy, Justin Nelan,
Brandon and Amanda Couse, Madalenn, Lidia, Dominick and Nathan Nelan. Lifelong
best friend, Michelle (Shelly) Lepere; special friends, Jimmy DeRico,
Christine Couse, and Marie Duchy. Along with many other friends, cousins,
nieces and nephews.

strength and fortitude, generous spirit, vibrant personality, quick wit, good
humor and beautiful smile touched all that were privileged to know her.

SCHNAUTZ, Earl E.
A longtime resident of the Southport community passed away at his Cedar St.
home on Friday afternoon, January 22, 2010 with his loving family at his side
at the age of 77.
Born on August 25, 1932 in Elmira, Earl was the son of the late, Elmer &
Freida Schwab Schnautz. He married Anna Parfitt on January 3, 1954 in
Centenary United Methodist Church. Earl was well known in the Southport
community having operated E & O Ford Sales / Southern Tier Heating for
over 50 years and was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his loving family, wife and companion, Anna Parfitt Schnautz,
Southport; son, Earl (Debbie Lackey) Schnautz; grandchildren, Brittany
Schnautz, Rochester and Katie Schnautz, Elmira; sister, Barbara Schnautz,
Elmira; brother, Carl (Sally) Schnautz, Horseheads; nieces and nephews. In
addition to his parents, Earl was predeceased by his daughter, Melinda
"Moe" Carpenter on March 30, 2008.
In honoring his wishes there will be no public services. Memorials in his

gave Earl through his long illness and final days at home.
OSGOOD, Bryan H.
"Flyin Bryan # 09"
Bryan, a longtime resident of the Elmira area passed away Saturday, December
19, 2009 at his home with his loving family by his side after a brave nine
month battle with an illness.
Bryan was a business man, "Osgood Motor Co." for many years. He was
a well known accomplished race car driver throughout New York State and
Pennsylvania, winning the first two races at Pocono Race Track in
Pennsylvania. He began dirt track racing at Bodines Race Track in Chemung and
went on to Sprints and NASCAR. Bryan was born December 10, 1932 in
Lawrenceville, PA to Erwin & Charlotte Osgood, now deceased. He was the
third born of seven children; brothers, Elwin, Laverne, Nyle, Clair, sister
Margery, all deceased.
Still living is beloved brother, Keith Osgood and wife, Linda, Erin; Also
deceased is beloved daughter-in-law, Debi Osgood.
Surviving Bryan is his loving wife and companion, Dolores Fives Osgood and six
children, David Osgood and fiancée, Kristie Griffin, Elmira; Gary Osgood and
wife, Lois, Elmira; Pam and husband Charles Werz, Daytona Beach, FL; Kelly
Osgood Martin and fiancée, Chris Larsen, Deltona, FL; Lynn Robertson and
husband, James, Sterling, VA; Faith Osgood and fiancée, Billy Leszewski,

STROCK, Laura Ann Williamson
"Nana"
Passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Arnot-Ogden Medical Center at
the age of 69.
A beloved daughter of the late, Eldon & Katherine Owen Williamson. She was
married to Kenneth Strock who also predeceased her.
Surviving is her loving family, three brothers, Robert Owen Williamson;
Russell (Jean) Williamson; John Roger Williamson; two sisters, Donna Rae (Les)
Wilbur and Kathleen Marie Williamson; also surviving is Michael Hill whom she
loved as her own son. She was loving called Nana by her many nieces and
nephews. Laura worked many years in the food industry. She was well known
having worked at Patsy's Lunch and Anne's Pancakes. Laura was employed at the
Arnot-Ogden Medical center for over 17 years in the Dietary Department
In serving the Lord, she was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church for
many years and developed many close friendships. Laura appreciated those
friends during her illness. An animal lover, Laura adored "Bambi"
and "Zoee". She enjoyed traveling and saw many parts of the America.
While at home, she enjoyed crocheting and time spent with loved ones.

Passed away on Wednesday evening, December 30, 2009 at her Herrick St. home
with her loving family by her side at the age of 78.
Born on March 11, 1931 in Elmira, Mary Lou was the daughter of the late
William P. & Marie Shea. She married James J. Dolan on May 21, 1949 at St.
Mary's Church and he predeceased her on April 4, 2007 following 57 years of
marriage.
Surviving are her eight children, Nancy (Paul) Huonker, Apalachin; Paula
(David) Cook, Pine City; James (Sue) Dolan, Harwich, MA; William (Linda)
Dolan, Southport; Christopher (Sandra Kershner) Dolan, Corning; Betty (Gary)

Millerton, PA; sister-in-law, Helen Ryan, Albany, NY; fifteen grandchildren,
Lynn Huonker, Carrie (Kyle) Krawczyk, PJ (Kristen Burbidge) Huonker, Angie
(Drew) Wright, Steve Dolan, Steve (Kelly) Cook, Phil (Michelle) Cook, Ashley

St. Mary's Church. She spent many hours enjoying needlepoint, knitting and
sewing. She was employed by Mustico's Restaurant and St. Joseph's Hospital but
her greatest passion was that of a homemaker, caring for her home and
cherished family. She especially enjoyed traveling to Cape Cod sitting and
listening to the ocean.

p.m. A Monday morning prayer service will take place at the funeral home at

& Paul's Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved
husband, James Dolan.
SCHIAVE, Frank G.
1250 Maple Avenue, Elmira, well-known resident of Chemung County, went to
" relieve the watch on the signal bridge" Wednesday morning,
December 23, 2009, at age 94. Born in New York, NY, Frank was the son of
Marion L. and Josephine Vergallito Schiave. Frank and Lura Louise Derbyshire
of Elmira were married August 12, 1939, recently celebrating their 70th
wedding anniversary. After graduating from Southside High School, Elmira, in
1932, Frank served for several years in the United States Navy. At the
outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and
distinguished himself serving on Navy vessels as a Signalman on the staff of
the Commandant of Trans. Div. Eight of the Pacific Fleet. He was proud to have
participated in the first landings at Guadalcanal. He was awarded a
Presidential Commission in 1943, one of thirteen men to be so honored. He was
employed by LeValley, McLeod, Kinkaid for a quarter of a century, followed by
several years as a buyer at C.R. Evans Co. and at Kimble Contracting. Frank
was a long-time member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Elmira Masonic Lodge 95,
Guadalcanal Veterans Association, Veterans' History Project, local historical
societies, and active in ships' reunions for many years. Surviving are his
wife, Louise, daughters, Marjorie L. (Peter J.) Lucarelli, Leesburg, Fl; and
Barbara J. (Calvin R.) Gillette, Elmira; grandchildren, Caryl N. (Randy S.
Denierio) Lucarelli, Patrick J. (Christine A.) Lucarelli, Suzanne E. (John K.)
Knighton, William M. (Hether A.) Gillette; great-grandchildren, Nicole and
Gregory Barron, Marley Denierio, Corey and Laura Knighton, Adam, Abbie and
Matthew Gillette. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral
Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport, on Sunday, December 27, from 3
to 6 p.m. A celebration of Frank's life with the Holy Eucharist will take
place at Trinity Episcopal Church, Elmira, Monday at 10 a.m., the Reverend Dr.
William Lutz officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials

A lifelong resident of Elmira, passed away on Monday afternoon, December 7,
2009 at his Pennsylvania Ave. home with his loving family at his side at the
age of 71.
Born on April 5, 1938, Wade was the son of the late Marvin Hill & Mildred
Hill Roberts. He retired from J.F. & J.P. Wenzel Contractors Inc. Wade
loved his family very much. He also loved animals, especially,
"Clancy" who was his constant canine companion.
Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Hubbard Hill; daughters,
Melissa (Bob) Ostrander, Julie (Ed) Walton, Felicia (Brian) Barr and Kristie
(Jason) Baldwin; grandchildren, Mathew, Robert (Nikki), Casey, Nikki (Scott),
Jason, Courtney, Mitchell, Angela, Brian, Kayla, Jaymie, Alyssa, Alexis and
Jaylin; great grandchildren, Zachary, Lenny Ray, Caleb and Kole; sisters,
Marilyn Levack and Yvonne Strait; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Wade was predeceased by his brother, Nolan Hill
and sister, Barb Gaughan.

"Ed" (Knappy)
Formerly of Pauline Ave. Pine City, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
Born on August 9, 1930 in Schenectady, NY. He is the son of the late Ernest L.
& Hazel Reed Knapp. He was employed at American LaFrance for 37 years and
then by ABB Traction. He enjoyed resorting his 1928 Model T Ford. He was a
talented carpenter and built his home. Ed was a devoted and loving husband,
father, grandfather and great grandfather. Ed is predeceased by his wife,
Dorothy A. Knapp; first wife, Anna L. Knapp Taylor; daughter, Deborah
Golightly; two sisters and ten brothers.
Ed is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Allen W.) Sick, FL; Mary (Bob)
Austin, RI; Lora (John) Roupp, Elmira Heights; Michelle (Joe) McGovern, RI;
and son, Laverne E. Knapp II and his fiancé, Yvonne Palmer, Lowman; brother,
John A. Knapp, Wellsburg; sisters-in-law, Ida Knapp, Rochester; Ruth Knapp,
Millerton, PA; Rheubenna Knapp, Canisteo; Carol Knapp, Elmira Heights; several
grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. A very close

BEECHEY, William Kempfer
"Bill"
A longtime resident of the Fassett, PA community passed away on Tuesday
morning, December 1, 2009 at the age of 80.
Born on February 22, 1929 in Nantyglo, PA Bill was the son of the late William
Sr. & Ada Kempfer Beechey. In service to his country, Bill served in the
United States Navy from 1948-1952. He married the love of his life, Donna
Greenough on July 4, 1952 in Elmira. Mr. Beechey was employed by Westinghouse
for over 37 years until his retirement. He was a lifelong member of Fassett
Baptist Church and was very active with youth where he coached the church's
softball team. An avid outdoorsman, Bill was a member of the South Creek Rod
and Gun Club and loved fishing and hunting. He held a passion for photography
and was well known by his readers as the Bradford County correspondent for the
Star Gazette.
Surviving is his beloved family, wife and companion, Donna Greenough Beechey,
formerly of Fassett, and presently of Sayre, PA; their children, Danielle
(Wayne) Tice, Gillett, PA; Rod (Beth) Beechey, Midlothian, TX; seven
grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Rose, Nathan (Cynthia) Beechey, Ryan Beechey,
Justin (Adri) Beechey, Matthew Beechey, Adam (Keiko) Tice and Ashley
"Ash" (Lindsey Groom) Tice; three great grandchildren, Noah Beechey,
Patrick Tice and Maria Tice; sister, Doris (Orley) Ford, Fassett, PA;
brother-in-law, Paul (Helen) Greenough, Stow, OH; sister-in-law, Betty
Greenough, Bend OR; nieces, nephews and many cherished friends.

Caywood, Arthur L.
A longtime resident of South Broadway, Wellsburg, NY went home to be with the
Lord on Monday morning, May 22, 2006 peacefully in the home he built fifty six
years ago within the care of his family, wonderful friends and Southern Tier
Hospice at the age of 86. Art was born in Elmira on March 14, 1920, son of
Hazel MacDougal Caywood. He learned at an early age the importance of hard
work as he left school to help support his mother and siblings. He worked on a
farm in Himrod through his teen years. Art married Alice Montene Holland on
August 30, 1941 in Harrison Valley, PA. In honor of his brother, James E.
Caywood who was killed in Italy during WWII, Arthur joined the United States
Navy. While in service, his ship came under enemy fire and several of his
comrades lost their lives. Following the war, he returned home to raise a
family. A skilled carpenter, he built several homes in the area. He was well
known within his trade as a Tool & Die Maker. A quiet unassuming
gentlemen, Art found enjoyment in family outings, traveling to Virginia,
dining out, quiet afternoons at the lake and most especially a long day of
golf with his buddies at the Mark Twain Golf Course. He was proud of his
family and always encouraged us to do better. His hard work and sacrifices
made it possible for his family to have an easier life than he had growing up.
Surviving is his loving family, including his wife of 65 years, Alice Montene
Holland Caywood; daughters and sons-in-law, Jeannette & Thomas Congdon,
Pine City; Sheila & Bo Jennings Fink, Strausburg, VA; a son, James Caywood,
Southport; four grandchildren, Rebecca & Dave Davis, Lisa & James Epp,
Scott Congdon, and Michael Fink; seven great grandchildren, Ashton Davis,
Rachel, Stephen, Daniel, Nathan and Elizabeth Epp and Brooke Congdon Binford;
a sister, Mary Caywood Rice, Elmira Heights; sisters-in-law, Betty Morgan,
Millport and Edna Mascho, Horseheads; several nieces, nephews and his church
family at Fassett Baptist, along with many cherished family friends and the
companion he had made in his little dog "Corky".
In addition to his mother, Hazel, and his brother, James, Art was also
predeceased by his brother, Harold Morgan, and his sister, Joyce Fielder.

7-9 p.m. Funeral services officiated by his pastor and friend the Reverend
Donald Rockwell and the Reverend Richard Farrell will be private. Art will be
accorded full military honors and will be buried in Bath National Cemetery,
Bath, NY. Memorial donations may be directed to the Fassett Baptist Church Ice
Cream Social Fund, 36089 Rt. 14, Gillett, PA 16925 in his memory.

Bennett, Helen
A long time resident of the Southport community was reunited with her beloved
Richard following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, January 13,
2005 peacefully in their home.
Helen was a Private Duty Nurse and cared for many area families during an
illness or through their elderly years. Some of her patients she served for
many years. In later years she brought comfort to countless families in her
service to Caywood's. She made families feel at home and assured each one
their needs would be cared for, and did it with the outmost grace, style and
class.
Helen's many interest included dinning out at her favorite local restaurants,
walking countless miles in her community, making sure her friends never did
with out, and spending time with the love of her life, Richard Bennett until
his passing in 1994.
Helen is survived be a community of close friends who cherished having her in
our lives. We love you Helen and will never forget the imprint you have left
on our hearts. |
